The Boy Scouts of America have the motto “Be Prepared.” Take a page from my book and learn from my mistake. You don’t want to find yourself unable to complete assignments or have the tools for clinical. This blog will examine a few things to remember before starting your first semester.
Tech Tools to Stay Organized:
CRNA programs require extensive time management and data organization. The right tech tools will help you stay on top of things. Your institution will have certain specifications for any laptop or desktop that must handle the school’s required software or lockdown browser capabilities.
Laptops, Tablets, or expandable Monitors?:
Many say it is the dealers’ choice; however, whether it is a MAC or Microsoft, you will find yourself staring at a screen for hours. Consider a larger-screen laptop, a desktop monitor extension, or an attached monitor for your laptop. Additionally, you may want a tablet/ipad to take handwritten notes while looking at notes on a laptop/desktop. Take a look at the following links and consider making new tech purchases during “back-to-school” sales.
What I use:
I have always been a Microsoft fan, and I like the option to handwrite notes. Therefore, the Surface Studio gives me the power of a laptop and the capability of a notetaking tablet. I purchased this a few months before starting the program and have no regrets!
Noise-Cancelling Headphones:
Consider your AirPods a thing of the past. Or, at least, noise-canceling headphones are superior for what they accomplish in a noisy Starbucks or Barnes and Noble. You can save money and achieve good noise canceling. The following are links to a few reputable brands: Beats, Sony, and Bose. Look at reviews, and ask your future classmates what they have found useful.
What I use:
These headphones have lasted two years, and I purchased them at a whopping $45-50. They are light and airy. As of today, they are running a sale, making them $39.
Essential Books to Start Reading:
You want me to say, “Buy these 20 books and get a head start.” As a marathoner, I do not run a 12-mile race before starting the 26.2-mile race. One of the best advice I was given before starting the program was to spend time with family, travel, save money, or climb Mount Kilimanjaro (not kidding; a classmate did this the month before starting our program). However, if pharmacology or physiology topics are still fuzzy or you haven’t taken anatomy/physiology in over three years, a refresher course can help. The CRNA Club and Atomic Anesthesia have resources available that can help!
Clinical Must Haves:
When you start clinical rotations, you’ll need more than just knowledge. Equip yourself with these items to make your rotations smoother.
Comfortable Shoes:
- Many brands exist, and prices range widely. Consider choosing a brand you are familiar with. Additionally, this article breaks down the 2024 best picks for shoes for nurses.
Stethoscope:
- Stethoscope is an excellent website with all brands and accessories if you are in the market. Additionally, if you want to jump on the trend and upgrade to an EKO, they have a running discount for students.
Badge Holder and Accessories:
Aside from a badge holder and reel, consider a Sharpie holder. These are handy when a readily available Sharpie is needed in the OR. This Amazon links accessories.
In conclusion, preparing for your first semester in a CRNA program is crucial for success.
